ITIL Release and deployment management for Windows 7 January 17, 2009

With all the hype around Windows 7 I have been thinking about the release and deployment processes that would be associated with a large and very visible project as this one. Obviously, there has been quite some customer feedback from the previous releases and versions (Vista). This would have been the basis for the RFC (request for change). So how would the ITIL processes be applicable to this project?

  1. It will all be under control of Change Management, as this process is meant to manage all risk associated with changing the IT infrastructure and IT Services. As there will be a major potential business impact for faults and mistakes, I would expect a rigid process and procedures around this project and a strong CAB with firm decision making powers.

  2. Change Management will rely on the process of Evaluation to gain a better understanding of the expected performance and quality criteria for this changed service and product. This is most likely the reason for the current public beta testing that is being performed, as this is a fantastic way to gather performance information from the production environments.
  3. Service Validation and Testing definitely plays an important role! Especially as we are talking about software development as well as the development of associated support services. Not only will the project team need input from the support engineers early in the project (as is appropriate when one follows the V-model for testing), but the formal transfer of knowledge – including, but not limited to Known Errors – is very important for future client support. Knowledge Management is considered to be a separate process that is very closely related to both Service Validation & Testing and Evaluation.
  4. The project will also be heavily involved with the Release and Deployment process of the organization. How are we going to make sure that we manage the transfer from one environment to another with out disrupting the status quo? (things should only get better.. not worse). Who do we include in the training and education, as well as the communication plans around this release? As this project is delivering a product that will be for sale to the general public, you will receive direction and input from the Sales and Marketing departments as well as the technical support areas.

It all sounds so easy, and on paper it will be. However, I haven’t even talked about the connection with Service Asset & Configuration Management, Capacity Management, the Service desk and all the operational processes. It is much more involved than you can type up in 400 words but… in order to manage a project this large and this visible, maybe you have to start very simplistic and state the obvious processes, procedures and work instructions that are needed for a smooth transition. Maybe, just maybe, this will help in identifying all the people involved and the gaps in the initial thought patterns.

Who knows… it might even help Microsoft in delivering a product to the market that actually does what it is supposed to do and is accepted and revered by clients across the world?!

Or would that be too good to be true?!

I need to get this mantra right as currently I am mainly getting annoyed and frustrated by the lack of software performance. The reason for this is quite simple: last week I spent 2 hours on the phone with our IT support guy to see if he can fix our CRM software application (this was effort nr. 58937562! – well, OK… that might be slightly exaggerated but we have been through this at least 5 times so far! that is 10 hours of downtime from my point of view and I’m not even talking about loss of productivity because of the fact that the software doesn’t work in between those phone support meetings!)

So we decided to change CRM system as this current one clearly isn’t working for us. I may have a simplistic view to the world but I my mind software (and IT in general) should make my working life easier… not harder. It needs to be available when I want to use it and increase the speed / performance of my work. None of this is the case with our current CRM system; ever since the upgrade to version 4.0 we have been having issues with it – it crashes outlook (and silly me thought that when you purchase the CRM system of the same supplier they might be compatible?!) and slows down the computers to a near halt… NOT funny.

But it’s ok –  it was worth the try and I am happy we didn’t purchase the software but used it as a hosted solution (well… that’s a whole different can of worms that are probably best left not opened!!!) so changing will hopefully be fairly easy.

The thing is – The Art of Service is an IT Service Management company. So every day we work with our clients to help them to improve their IT Solutions. And it hurts when you’re on the receiving end of very poor service… or maybe I am just overly sensitive?! (occupational hazard???)

So we’re embarking on another journey with another software solution… the business requirements stay the same, so let’s see how this software package will work out…

Software is your friend.. if only I could find a easy overview of system requirements for this particular package. And an IT support guy who can actually help!!! (you can send me emails if you know of such a person! much appreciated)

How can this day have so many faces? It started off quite normal… my dressage lesson got cancelled which was OK as I am working on the deadline to get the cloud computing workshop finished. I took advantage of this by going to the office at the usual time so I could get started on the presentation… that was 56 minutes ago!

AARRGGHH…. I had to restart my laptop 2 times, MS Office outlook didn’t start properly -  stopped working and now you get that horrible message “your fine is being checked for problems, this may take a few minutes…” Yeah – try 10 minutes!!!

I know, computers are supposed to make your life easier -  give you more efficiency and higher productivity but NOT TODAY! And isn’t it Murphy’s law that this sort of stuff happens when you really don’t have the time?!

Ah well… just one of those things that puts challenges in your way.. WELL – I am not falling for it! I am staying in control and focused. I am going to use this time to get the team together for morning tea as it is Claire’s birthday today!

This is merely a glitch – a blib on the road to test us all.. well, this time I am not letting my day be ruined by something like this!

HA – and you know what happened? the moment I typed the last sentence – my outlook started to work again and my laptop is ready to start work this morning. I guess a focused, strong vision and leadership doesn’t only work on the people in your office but also for laptops and other equipment!

Gotta run now…. the birthday cake is being cut!
