The first 5 things I love about my blackberry Bold October 26, 2008

My husband surprised me yesterday with a Blackberry Bold! I have been looking to buy one for months now as I am traveling a lot and really would like to be able to stay in touch with home and office… I couldn’t make up my mind though: was I going to buy the Bold or wait for the new Pearl flip that is coming out or wait even longer for the Storm (with touch screen)?

Now that I have the bold I can’t believe I have lived my life so long without it… I LOVE that phone! (I know I sound like a geek, but it is so true… )

OK – so what are the first 5 things I love about my brand-spanking new Blackberry Bold:

  1. The screen
    It is so clear and bright! Absolutely amazing colours and text is very easy to read
     
  2. The ease of use
    I have never ever used a smart phone in my life and I can’t believe how easy it is. The menus are very intuitive and after half a day I already felt as if I’ve owned and operated smart phones all my life.
     
  3. The ringtones
    Ok – this is going to sound weird but I don’t like the “song”-ring-tones. I want my phone to sound like a phone and I couldn’t find that setting on my old one. This one sounds exactly the way I want it!!! 
     
  4. emailing on the go
    Setting up my gmail account on the Blackberry was a breeze! I couldn’t believe how easy it was… and it worked after only 1 try! (if only exchange was the same… :-(  but that’s another story)
     
  5. The sound quality
    My old phone was slowly dying after 4 or 5 years and I couldn’t always hear people so well. This phone is absolutely amazing. Very clear sound, not just for me but also for the receiver of my calls… A lot of people have already commented on it! 
I know these might be pretty basic but keep in mind I’ve only had this phone for 48 hours! I might come up for some other pros and cons in the next few weeks when I start traveling in Australia and overseas (and I will have received my first phone bill by then… that might change my view slightly! )

Did I say bold? …. I meant flip… no, I really meant Bold… perhaps, or maybe the flip? September 11, 2008

Just when you think you’ve made a decision about which Blackberry you would like to buy – they come out with another model! This doesn’t make things any easier!!! For a while now I have been looking at a smart phone for business use. I am traveling quite a bit and the idea is that it will be easier to stay in touch with the office and business activities wherever I am. I currently do this with my laptop, but you don’t always have your laptop open and connected, so I am going to buy a smartphone to bridge that gap.

I really thought I was going to wait another few weeks until RIM would release the Blackberry bold in Australia. I really like the idea of this “phone”, as it combines the WIFI and Html internet options with a more business approach that the iphone can’t offer (yet). Sad really, as initially I really really thought that I wanted to buy the iPhone, but nooooooo… I have made up my mind: it is going to be the Bold! It has all the features that I need so the decision was quite easy.

…. that was yesterday…. because you know what I saw today? Blackberry is coming out with a NEW model phone based on the Pearl series…. the Pearl 8220

Now I am back at square one!!!

Being in Australia, we are usually the last country to receive any new phone models so I guess it will be a while until the Pearl 8220 will be on sale here, but the Bold will be in the stores next month. Do I wait (again) or make a bold decision and get the bigger – available –  model? How long will it take for the Pearl to hit the stores here? 

I don’t know… I really like the flippy thing as my last 2 phones had this as well and it has protected me from some unwanted phonecalls and text messages (like sometimes happened with my other phone, as I never locked the keyboard… NOT a good move!)

Hang on –  I will get some expert advice: I will ask my trusted 7 year old what mummy should buy. Yep, that’s what I am going to do….

The last 24 hours have been very exciting for me… I was waiting for Google to release their new web browser so that I could download it and test it!

Yup –  I told you that I can be a little bit geeky sometimes? Never mind, I’ve got it and it works like a charm! (or rather – so far so good…. as you never know with new software).
I like the fact that it is very intuitive, that creating a bookmark is simply clicking the star left to the address bar (just like you do with your GMAIL in your inbox) and I like the fact that you can grab a tab and turn it into a separate window. Very easy when you use 2 screens like I do and you want to do some internet research. you can have one version of Chrome open on each screen and it really works very well.

I can’t comment yet on the speed but it hasn’t been very slow – doesn’t feel very different from Firefox but definitely works better on my laptop than IE7 does! 

So now that I’ve got that ticked off my list I’m on to the next one: finally I am going to exchange my phone for a Blackberry… a BOLD move… if you get my drift!
